The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom have joined forces to launch a $10 million initiative aimed at bolstering food security in Yemen. This collaborative effort involves the Saudi aid entity KSrelief and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, each contributing $5 million. Their joint resources will be channeled through the UN World Food Programme, targeting the governorates of Al-Mahrah, Hadramout, Aden, Al-Dhale, and Lahij for the project’s implementation.
Designed to alleviate hunger and enhance resilience among Yemen’s vulnerable populations, the project will deliver conditional cash transfers. This financial support aims to improve food access, revitalize essential infrastructure, and gradually wean families off emergency food aid, fostering a move towards self-reliance. By focusing on both immediate relief and long-term development, the initiative seeks to stabilize and empower affected communities.
Beyond financial assistance, the project encompasses a variety of components, including vocational training and support for local governance. These measures are intended to equip residents with the skills and knowledge needed for sustainable management of community resources. By encouraging better governance and infrastructure improvements, the initiative aims to lay the groundwork for enduring economic and social stability.
Saudi Arabia’s commitment through KSrelief forms a crucial part of its global humanitarian strategy. Since 2015, the agency has spearheaded over 4,400 aid projects, totaling more than $8.5 billion in 113 countries. This latest collaboration with the UK underscores the ongoing efforts of both nations to address pressing humanitarian needs and promote resilience in regions grappling with crises like Yemen.
