Saudi Arabia Supports UN Condemnation of Houthi Attacks, Stresses Right to Defend

The United Nations Security Council has issued a statement condemning the recent surge in attacks by Houthi forces against Saudi Arabia, a move welcomed by the Kingdom as it reaffirms its right to self-defense under international law. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for the Security Council’s solidarity in denouncing the assaults that have targeted civilians, airports, and critical infrastructure, as well as posed threats to maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait.

The Security Council specifically condemned the attacks on King Khalid International Airport that occurred on October 10 and 11, incidents that reportedly resulted in casualties. In addition, attacks targeting other Saudi airports and facilities belonging to Saudi Aramco were also denounced. The Council members extended their condolences to the victims’ families and urged the Houthis to cease their military escalation and halt attacks against civilian targets and infrastructure.

Furthermore, the Security Council emphasized the importance of fully implementing Resolution 2216, which was adopted in 2015, along with subsequent resolutions. It called for enhanced international cooperation, including collaboration with Yemen’s internationally recognized government, to prevent the flow of weapons, military equipment, funding, training, and technical assistance to the Houthis.

The Council also condemned Houthi threats and attacks against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, stressing the need to ensure the safety of vessels, their crews, and international maritime navigation. In addition, the Security Council reiterated its support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government, as well as the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Expressing backing for diplomatic efforts, the Security Council reaffirmed its support for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg in his mission to achieve a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen. The ongoing conflict and its implications continue to draw international attention, as stakeholders seek to foster peace and stability in the region.
