Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has strongly condemned the recent attacks by Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia and reiterated Italy’s commitment to supporting the Kingdom. In a phone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Tajani expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and emphasized the importance of safeguarding civilians and infrastructure in the region.
Tajani also stressed the need for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing Yemen crisis, advocating for continued support for United Nations efforts to facilitate peace. The conversation between the two ministers highlighted the critical need for maintaining security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, areas vital for global shipping and commerce.
In light of these concerns, Tajani underscored the significance of bolstering the European Union’s Operation Aspides, which was launched to protect maritime routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This naval mission, initiated in February 2024, aims to enhance security and ensure safe passage for commercial vessels in these strategically important waters.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Cabinet issued a stern warning to the Houthi forces regarding the repercussions of their continued assaults on Saudi territory. The Cabinet reiterated the necessity of protecting navigation through the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait and acknowledged the efforts of the international Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen in countering Houthi aggression.
The discussions between Italy and Saudi Arabia reflect a broader international effort to address the instability in the Gulf region, emphasizing both military preparedness and diplomatic engagement as essential strategies for peace and security.
