Saudi Arabia and Greece Enhance Energy and Security Cooperation Amid Global Concerns

Saudi Arabia and Greece have reinforced their commitment to enhancing cooperation in energy, investment, and security, as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met in Riyadh. This meeting, which marks a century of diplomatic relations between the two nations, underscores their shared focus on strengthening bilateral ties across various sectors.

In a joint statement, the leaders emphasized the critical need to safeguard international shipping routes and ensure the steady flow of energy supplies. They voiced concerns over the threat that attacks on energy infrastructure pose to global markets and economic stability. Greece acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s efforts to stabilize oil markets, particularly through the use of alternative export routes such as the East-West Pipeline.

Energy cooperation was a central theme in the discussions, with both countries agreeing to expedite progress on an electricity interconnection project that will enable power exchanges between Saudi Arabia and Europe via Greece. They explored further opportunities for exporting clean hydrogen from Saudi Arabia to Greece and other EU markets. The talks also covered investments in renewable energy, conventional energy, and petrochemicals.

The discussions extended beyond energy, as both countries committed to expanding economic cooperation in infrastructure, construction, logistics, and technology. Digital connectivity was highlighted with the advancement of the EMC submarine cable project, which aims to enhance communications infrastructure between East and West. The two nations also encouraged mutual investments, with Saudi Arabia inviting Greek companies to participate in major initiatives like Riyadh Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup, while Greece welcomed Saudi investment in various sectors.

On the security front, the leaders agreed to bolster cooperation in defense, focusing on counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and intelligence sharing. They also reaffirmed their dedication to international climate agreements and explored collaboration in areas such as carbon management, artificial intelligence, space technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and culture.

This meeting builds on the strategic partnership council established in 2022, reflecting the growing significance of Saudi-Greek relations in global energy security, international trade, and regional connectivity.
