UN Chief Warns Global Conflicts Intensify Economic Strain on Poor Nations

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stern condemnation of the recent Houthi attacks on civilian targets in Saudi Arabia, describing the violence as unacceptable. He highlighted how global conflicts are exacerbating economic pressures on vulnerable nations, during a speech at the UN headquarters in New York. Guterres expressed concern about the deteriorating situation in Yemen, where fighting, particularly around Taiz, has displaced hundreds of thousands and increased humanitarian needs.

Guterres emphasized the necessity for restraint and a renewed political process to resolve the conflict in Yemen. He stated that the UN special envoy is actively engaging with involved parties to facilitate dialogue and work towards a peaceful resolution. The situation in Yemen, marked by civilian suffering and regional instability, is a reflection of broader global tensions that Guterres warned could create economic shocks worldwide.

Describing the phenomenon as an “El Niño of war,” Guterres explained that conflicts in one region can disrupt global systems, leading to increased costs for food, fuel, and borrowing. These disruptions deepen existing global inequalities, leaving poor families struggling to meet basic needs and burdening developing nations with debt, limiting their resources for critical services like healthcare and education.

In addition to condemning the Houthi attacks, Guterres also criticized assaults on civilians and infrastructure in various conflict zones, including the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan. He stressed the importance of protecting homes, hospitals, schools, airports, and energy facilities under international humanitarian law.

The UN chief voiced his concerns over the conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly regarding restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza and attacks on Palestinian communities in the West Bank. He called for increased humanitarian support and urged donors to contribute to a $450 million funding appeal aimed at assisting the populations in Gaza and the West Bank over the next six months. Guterres reiterated the need for a credible political process to end the Israeli occupation and achieve a two-state solution.

Looking ahead to his upcoming visit to Egypt, Guterres stated his intent to focus on preventing further escalation, protecting civilians, and creating opportunities for diplomacy and peace. His remarks come amid reports of intensified Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on airports, which have raised concerns about civilian safety and potential further instability in the region.
