Tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate as Saudi Arabia’s air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Houthi rebels near the holy city of Mecca. This incident on September 15 marks another in a series of confrontations involving the Houthis, who are engaged in a prolonged conflict with the Saudi-led coalition.
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki emphasized the inviolable status of the two holy mosques, framing their protection as a “red line” for Saudi Arabia. Al-Malki warned that measures would be taken to prevent further threats from the Houthis, referencing a previous attempt by the group to target Mecca with a ballistic missile in 2017.
However, the Houthis have denied any intention to target Mecca. Houthi spokesperson Hazem al-Assad refuted the Saudi claims, asserting that the group did not aim at the holy city. This denial comes amidst a backdrop of increased security alerts across Saudi Arabia due to the uptick in Houthi attacks.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned the reported drone attack, voicing its support for safeguarding Mecca, Medina, and other Islamic holy sites. The organization’s stance underscores the broader regional and religious implications of any threat to these sites.
